The Southern Zeliang Wrestling Association (SZWA) held its 8th Wrestling Meet today at Local ground, Peren Town with Raitu Elu, Chairman, Zeme Council Nagaland as chief guest and Ichirang, SDO (PHED) as the guest of honour.
Pastor Haiku of PTBC invoked God’s blessings after which there was a brief introduction on the history of SZWA and its connections with the Zeliang Wrestling Association (ZWA) and Naga Wrestling Association.
Chief guest, Raitu Elu in his speech stated that Zeliang people are blessed with good and fertile land doubled with great talents in various fields, sports being one of them. “We cannot do justice to all of these if we do not fear God in the first place. Encouragement is lacking and has resulted in lesser participants in this field year by year” he said.
“Players should discard the idea of celebrating their success in wine but rather strive to glorify God and our people”, he added.
The event saw 35 participants vie for the title which left the judges and public to awe. The participants displayed great amount of discipline, determination, strength and sportsmanship.
Kedizin emerged champion of the event and was awarded a cash prize of Rs.10, 000 while Nlumrai, Ngenleu and Dilu stood in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th position and received cash prizes of Rs.5000, Rs.3000 and Rs.2000 respectively.
