Diphu, Oct. 18 (EMN): The Kati Bihu and Agriculture Awareness Campaign Committee of the Agriculture department, Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC)  organised a Kati Bihu celebration cum  awareness campaign at Manja Kheroni on Tuesday.

Participating in the programme, MLA of Howraghat, Dorsing Ronghang told the farmers that the government of Assam is procuring paddy directly from farmers.

Ronghang said, “Never before has the government procured paddy from farmers. Farmers have to sell their paddy at a low price at market.  But now the Assam government has introduced a scheme called Assam State Agricultural Marketing Board (State Agency) for procurement of paddy from farmers.”

The Assam government is procuring per quintal paddy for INR 2400 from farmers where money is transferred through bank account of the farmers, the MLA said.

Ronghang also said it is the farmers who need more paddy.

He said farmers should have Farmer’s Certificate to sell out their agricultural produce, for which he asked the Agriculture officials to complete giving Farmer’s Certificates by November this year.

Executive Member (EM), Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), incharge of Agriculture and Land and Revenue, Amarsing Tisso emphasised agriculture farming for self-sufficiency.

While advising the farmers to consult with the agriculture officials about what crops are suitable depending on the variation of the soil of different places, Tisso said that Karbi Anglong’s land is very fertile and is suitable for growing any crops.

Tisso stressed on the importance to strengthen market facilities while citing that first there should be a market facility for farmers to sell out their agricultural products.

The EM also said seeds are procured by Assam Seeds Corporation and National Seeds Corporation as seeds germination is more guaranteed.

Later, Tisso and DC, Karbi Anglong, Madhumita Bagawati, ACS, lighted the earthen lamps to celebrate Kati Bihu joined by Members of Autonomous Council (MAC), Johnny Timung and Tiluttoma Hasnu.

Tarpaulins were distributed to farmers by the Agriculture department.
