Karbi villages against extension of Kaziranga National Park
Our Correspondent
Diphu, Nov. 7 (EMN): The people of Socheng Dhenta and Duar Bagori MAC constituencies have submitted a memorandum to the Chief Executive Member (CEM) of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) on Nov. 6 demanding not to allow the extension of Kaziranga National Park.
The extension of Kaziranga National Park is done on the pretext of declaring eco sensitive zone in area belonging to some Karbi villages.
The Karbis have been residing in the area for a long time. Bordering areas of Golaghat and Nagaon districts belonging to Karbi villages are also included in the eco sensitive zone.
This is done to evict the Karbis from their own land, mentions the memorandum.
The memorandum urged the CEM to act on it and prevent the extension of Kaziranga National Park so that the Karbis are not driven out of their own land.
The memo also states that without the knowledge and consent of the people of KAAC, it has set up three wild life sanctuaries namely East Karbi Anglong wild life sanctuary, North Karbi Anglong wild life sanctuary and Karbi Anglong Elephant Reserve Forest which is nothing but an attempt to extend area of Kaziranga National Park that would led to the displacement of people of Socheng and Duarbagory constituencies, mentions the memorandum.
