The Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) authorities on Wednesday celebrated Karbi Ningkan Kimi across the hill district of Karbi Anglong.
According to the Karbi calendar, February 1 is considered Karbi Ningkan Kimi- (Karbi New Year) and the new year marks the beginning of the traditional jhum cultivation of the Karbi people.
KAAC also declared February 1 as an official holiday in the KAAC-administered areas.
Many Karbi villages celebrated Karbi Ningkan Kimi by organising various fun-filled activities like games and sports, dancing and singing competitions and community feasting.
Rongkimi Presbyterian Church also celebrated the Karbi New Year by organising a public worship service, where Rev. Primingson Millick, spoke on the importance of the Karbi New Year celebration.
Since Karbi community is dependent on jhum cultivation, February is the month for selection of jhum cultivation and during this period Karbi people seek blessing from the Almighty for good health and favourable climate/ weather throughout.
A marathon race was also organised on the occasion of the Karbi New Year celebration. The youth fellowship also demonstrated a traditional dance Chong-kedam (warrior dance) and Nimso Kerung (Chomkan ritual dance).
Surprisingly, the Art & Culture department of KAAC which used to organise the Karbi Ningkan Kimi celebration every year at Council Colony, did not organise the celebration this year.
