Karbi community celebrates its New Year

DIPHU — People of Karbi Anglong celebrated its New Year -- Karbi Ningkan Kimi – across the district on Thursday by organising fun-filled activities including games and sports, singing and dancing competitions, and community feasts.

The Karbi Students' Association (KSA-Inglongpho) observed the occasion with its former KSA leaders and felicitated the successful APSC aspirants from the hills district of Karbi Anglong, West Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao. 

Meanwhile, the Rongkimi Presbyterian Church celebrated the Karbi Ningkan Kimi by Thong-Nokbe Kekat (marathon race) stating from Rongkimi Medical College road to Longjonchedon and back at the starting point, covering a distance of 6 km.

According to the Karbi calendar, New Year falls on February 1 and the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) had declared the occasion as official holiday in its administered areas. Besides festivities, Karbi Ningkan Kimi marks the beginning of traditional Jhum cultivation for the Karbi community.
