Padmashree Rongbong Terang during a peace meeting held at Circuit House in Diphu on June 10 Sunday said, “we are saddened by the death of the two youths, which is unfortunate. But there should not be mistrust among the different communities. What has happen has happened, we now need to think of dosing off the flame.” The meeting was convened by the district administration inviting various student, youth and women bodies, literary organisations, intellectuals, senior citizens of Diphu and leaders of various political parties of the district to avoid any repercussion that might take place. A minute of silence was observed before the meeting commenced to remember the two victims who lost their lives. Padmashree Terang said, “all tribes and communities living in Assam together form a greater Assamese community. The greater Assamese community with all tribes and communities have been living peacefully for years. What has already gone wrong cannot be made right and need to think with a positive mind.” “Some media are using sentences like Assamese killed, Karbi killed, but such wrong interpretations should be avoided. There is misconception on Karbis using un-parliamentary word in social media. We too are also aggrieved of the incident, but Karbis are not ‘junglee’, Karbis are not dogs. Such misconceptions on Karbis should not be shared in social media,” he pleaded. Deputy Commissioner Karbi Anglong, Mridul Kr. Mahanta sought the cooperation of all communities in removing the misunderstanding that is arising in the minds of the people. There are various tribes and communities residing peacefully in Karbi Anglong for decades. The incident that occurred on June 8 was unfortunate and should not occur again in future. “For the crime committed by two or three people cannot be put to blame to all,” the DC said. Also, Mahanta assured that the district administration would reach out to other student organisations of the state. Students from the district studying at different colleges and universities would be reached out by keeping contact with DCs of all concerned districts keeping in mind that no harm is done to them, Mahanta said. Mahanta said, WhatsApp information should have authenticity and uploading wrong information should be stopped. The DC during the meeting said that people should not take the law in their own hands. There is law and order authority to deal any kind of situations and if any suspicious persons is seen loitering in the village, the villagers should immediately inform the village headman, Village Defense Party (VDP) or directly to the police. Additional SP Muzzafar Hussain said 16 persons have been arrested so far in connection with June 8 incident. A case no.33/18 under Dokmoka police station has been registered against the arrested persons. Those involved will not be spared and they will be arrested, Hussain assured. He warned that the administrators of WhatsApp groups to be aware of information uploaded by members as the administrators will be liable for any wrong sharings. Condemning the incident JI Kathar said there has been prevalence of child lifters in Northeast as information in social media is to be believed. Strong awareness drive from district administration should be conducted to rule out the misconception of child traffickers, Kathar said. Tensing Engti being brought up in Dengaon said, “I passed by matric from Dengaon High school. Till June 8 there has been no incidents like this before.” He advocated on forming of a peace committee to control the situation. Former EM, KAAC and vice president, KADCC Ashok Teron admitted that when he was EM, KAAC from 2012 came up with an idea of making Kangthilangso waterfall as a tourist destination and with the support from local people it was successful. “When I was EM, KAAC it was my idea of making Kangthilangso a tourist spot and with the support of local people comprising of Karbis, Bodos, Adivasis, Nepalis and others have beautified the place. The villagers comprising of different tribes and communities are innocent with simple minds. Flushing on my mind of the June 8 incident, where two of our brothers from Guwahati ended their lives here, I could not believe how it could happened,” Teron said. Convenor of 24+ organisations Angtong Engti and Dimasa Students Association, president Dhiraj Diphusa said that the incident cannot be branded to a particular community (Karbi) involved. In mob lynching public gather from different communities and cannot brand to a particular community or tribe, they said. During the meeting, leaders from various organisations demanded compensation to the families of the two victims and that the persons involved in the incident should be arrested.
