Karbi Anglong beat defending champions Morigaon 2-0
Diphu, Sep.6 (EMN): Karbi Anglong team entered the quarter-finals of the 70th Senior Inter-District Football Championship (Khirud Baruah Memorial Trophy) after defeating Morigaon in the final of the qualifying matches for Zone – C, played at Karbi Anglong Sports Association (KASA) stadium on September 5.
The tournament is organised by Assam Football Association and hosted by KASA.
It was a thrilling encounter as both teams displayed strong attacking football. The chief executive member, Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), Tuliram Ronghang, who is also president of KASA with other EMs and MACs also witnessed the match.
Morigaon who were the defending champion made repeated forays into the rival’s territory but failed to penetrate the strong defence of the KA players.
Finally, KA boys got a break in the 40th minute when Morigaon’s Biki Chaudang was booked for a handball inside the penalty box.
Chesong Hanse made no mistake to convert the penalty shot into a goal to take his team to a 1-0 lead in the first half.
In the second half, the play witnessed strong attacks and counter attacks with the visitors desperately trying to find the equalizer.
However, the visitors’ hopes were dashed by the spirited KA players determined to keep their score intact and the score remained 1-0 in favour of KA till regulation time.
In the dying minutes of injury time, KA’s lithe striker Malong Kiri Tisso scored the second goal with an assist from Jonasing Teron. Malongkiri was adjudged as the promising player in the Greater Diphu Sports Association (GDSA) Football League Championship of B- Division held earlier. He had then played for Pilgrim FC.
The quarter finalists of various zones will meet at Baksa. Horen Engti Kathar is the coach for the Karbi Anglong team.
