DIPHU — The Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), one of the Sixth Scheduled Councils in Assam, will celebrate its 72nd foundation day at Dongkamukam Sports Complex in West Karbi Anglong on June 23.
Chief Executive Member (CEM), KAAC, Tuliram Ronghang will grace the occasion as the chief guest.
The present KAAC was initially called the Mikir Hills District Council covering the two hill districts of Assam, viz. Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong.
The United Mikir and North Cachar Hills district were formed on November 17, 1951, by carving out parts of Nowgong (Nowgaon), Sibsagar, United Khasi Jaintia Hills and Cachar districts. The Karbi Anglong District Council was also formed in 1951. But later the name was changed to Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council on June 23, 1952. The signing of the MoU by the Autonomous State Demand Committee (ASDC), Karbi Students Association, Dimasa Students Union and NC Hills Students Federation on April 1, 1995, with the Central and State government has transferred 30 departments to KAAC.
Further, the signing of MoS by the erstwhile United People’s Democratic Solidarity (UPDS) with the Central and State government on November 25, 2011, has upgraded the KAAC to Karbi Anglong Autonomous Territorial Council (KAATC).
Presently, the KAAC has 30 members with 26 as elected members, headed by the Chief Executive Member (CEM).
On the occasion, the Art & Culture department, KAAC, will confer awards to several individuals for their remarkable achievements and contribution in various fields.
