Diphu, May 12 (EMN): The Assam State Election Commission (ASEC) on Thursday informed that election to the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) will be held on June 8 from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm.

The Model Code of Conduct has also been put into force with immediate effect in all the areas under KAAC, a notification from ASEC stated. The last date of nominations is on May 23, while the scrutiny, withdrawal of candidature and publication of the final list is on May 24.

Counting of votes will be held on June 12.

With the notification of election to KAAC, Dibakar Nath, Deputy Commissioner (DC), Karbi Anglong and Returning Officer (RO) for 10 Member of Autonomous Council (MAC) constituencies under Diphu and part of Howraghat LAC, notified details about the conduct of the election in a press conference held at DC conference hall in Diphu on Thursday.

Nath stated that voting will be on ballot papers and also informed about the designated officers for 10 MAC constituencies, where candidates can file their nomination papers.

The RO also mentioned the present voters of the 10 MAC constituencies — Howraghat with 31, 686 voters, Langfer with 41, 381 voters, Phuloni with 21,245 voters, Langhin with 28, 076 voters, Korkhanti with 25, 915 voters, Mahamaya with 25,260 voters, Nomati with 19, 227 voters, Singhason with 16, 762 voters, Dhansiri with 40, 041 and Lumbajong with 69,815 — with a total of 3, 19, 408 voters.

906 polling stations would be set up and the commission would engage 10,000-12,000 polling personnel to conduct the elections.

The KAAC is spread across two districts — Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong — and four sub-divisions – Diphu, Bokajan, Howraghat and Hamren.

Meanwhile, the spokesperson of All Party Hills Leaders Conference (APHLC), which is vocal about framing of rules of  KAAC  and preparation of separate electoral rolls, Angtong Engti Kathar said that, “Though the SEC has no authority over the KAAC for conduct of the election, it has forcefully declared it. The APHLC is compelled to contest the election with the sole purpose of correcting the voter lists of the KAAC”.
