DIPHU — The Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) celebrated its 73rd foundation day at the Sertalin Auditorium, KYF Complex in Taralangso, on Sunday.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Executive Member (CEM) of KAAC, Tuliram Ronghang, announced the schedule for ‘Team Karbi Anglong’ to visit rural villages starting in July. The visits aim to address problems and issues faced by the villagers firsthand.

He emphasised that Team Karbi Anglong comprises stakeholders from all fields, regardless of party affiliation or religious belief, dedicated to the betterment of Karbi Anglong. The team will visit each village, meet with village headmen, and hold meetings with villagers to assess the implementation of government schemes and identify any shortcomings.

He also clarified that during the meetings with villagers, they will be informed about the provisions of the 6th Schedule to the Constitution of India, specifically Paragraph 2 and Sub-Paragraph 7. He maintained that while the KAAC can prepare separate electoral rolls, the authority for implementation does not lie with the KAAC.

The CEM also stated that eviction operations on PGR/VGR land in Kheroni, West Karbi Anglong will proceed in accordance with the law. Further, he noted that peace has been restored in Karbi Anglong and stressed ongoing development efforts.

The CEM announced that the Karbi Anglong Day celebration on November 17 will span three days, featuring cultural exchange programmes with participation from the 6th scheduled autonomous councils of Northeast India.

During the celebration, the KAAC also presented awards: the Semson Sing Ingti Award in education was conferred upon Longsing Bey of Rongchek, Amri, West Karbi Anglong. He was the first Hindi teacher among the Karbis.

The Khorsing Terang Award for socio-culture was bestowed upon Lawrence Teron of Rongthe-ang, while the Sarsing Teron (Langkung Habe) Award in the field of politics was posthumously awarded to late Khorsing Bey, the former CEM of KAAC. The CEM Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to the MLA of Diphu, Bidyasing Engleng, in recognition of his extensive political career.

The KAAC also awarded a cheque of INR 5 lakh and a citation each to Dhoniram Tisso, maker of the Karbi feature film ‘Mirbeen’ and actress Malin Tissopi, as she bagged the best actress award at the NERI International Film Festival last year.

The 721 participants who set the Guinness Book of World Records for the longest line of moving people walking on Kangdongdang (bamboo stilts) in January at the Bukulia bypass of NH-29 were felicitated and awarded for this rare achievement.
