Former Supreme Court judge Dr. Mukundakam Sharma highlighted the importance of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) in modern jurisprudence during a special lecture at USTM.
DIMAPUR — Former Supreme Court judge Dr. Mukundakam Sharma has stressed that Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) has become an indispensable component of modern jurisprudence, offering faster, cost-effective and amicable settlement of disputes while reducing the burden on courts.
Delivering a special lecture on "Alternative Dispute Resolution System: Contemporary Relevance and Emerging Dimensions" at the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) on July 25, Justice Sharma said mediation, arbitration and conciliation are playing an increasingly important role in ensuring timely justice.
He also encouraged law students and young legal professionals to develop expertise in ADR mechanisms, describing them as the future of effective dispute resolution in India.
The programme was organised by the University School of Law and Research (USLR) at USTM's central auditorium, according to a university press release.

The event was attended by USTM Vice-Chancellor Prof. GD Sharma, Prof. Bharati Sharma, Professor Emeritus Prof. Subhram Rajkhowa, along with academicians, legal experts, advocates, faculty members, research scholars and students.
The programme began with the national anthem, followed by the felicitation of the guest. Prof. Subhram Rajkhowa delivered the welcome address, highlighting the importance of legal education in addressing contemporary societal challenges.
Established in 2011, USTM is the first state private university dedicated to science and technology in Northeast India. The university received an 'A' grade from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in its first cycle of accreditation in 2021.
The university reaffirmed its commitment to excellence in teaching, research, innovation and community engagement while promoting inclusivity, sustainability and regional development.
