Junior National Boxing Championship: 10 boxers from Haryana enter semifinals

Imphal, Oct. 31 (EMN): At the end of the quarter final rounds of the ongoing 5th Junior Girls’ National Boxing Championship 2022 in Imphal, as many as 10 boxers of Haryana entered the semifinals on Monday.

Haryana is followed by Rajasthan (six boxers), Maharashtra and Delhi (five boxers each), Uttarakhand and Tamil Nadu (four each).Two boxers each from Punjab, Chandigarh, and Uttar Pradesh also entered the semifinals.

The ongoing championship is organised by Manipur Amateur Boxing Association under the aegis of Boxing Federation of India.

Only one pugilist from Assam managed to reach the semi-finals on Monday.

The lone Assam boxer was Purabi Daimary, who defeated her rival boxer N Keerthika 5-0 in the quarter final bout of the 60-63 kg category. Daimary is expected to face Arju of Haryana in the semi-finals tomorrow.

In the day’s quarter final bouts, Assam’s Jumon Dutta lost to Krisha Verma of Rajasthan in the first round while Rempi Pegu lost to Palak Zambare of Maharashtra in 46-48 kg category.

Only two boxers out of its six quarter finalists of the host Manipur also entered the semi-finals. They are Supriya Devi Thokchom (52-54kg) and Sagar Chanu Mayengbam(46-48kg). Otherwise Anjali Devi Soibam, Esther Baite, Thoicha Devi Elangbam and Sandhyarani Tensubam lost to their rival boxers. Interestingly, Arunachal Pradesh’s lone semi-finalist Tarh Paya will face Manipur’s Supriya Devi Thokchom in the semi-finals on Tuesday.

It may be mentioned that altogether, 245 boxers across 28 states are competing in the six-day national boxing event which will conclude on November 2.
