Kohima, March 3: Two massive jungle fires broke out Friday morning, one at Kisama and the other at Forest Colony in the western part of Kohima.

According to Kohima Fire and Emergency Services personnel, a fire alert call at the Naga Heritage Village Kisama was received at around 9:45 am. It was reported that the fire broke out from short circuit at a transformer located near the World War II Museum and spread till the main entrance of Kisama. Five fire tenders, which were pressed into action, could neutralise the inferno by 12:30 pm.

In another incident, another jungle fire reportedly broke out in Forest Colony at around the same time. Two fire engines with emergency crew managed to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby areas at around 11 a.m. While the cause of the fire could not be ascertained till the time of filing of this report, authorities said the heavy winds that lashed Kohima since early Friday could have fanned any unchecked spark into an inferno. They requested the public to stay alert, particularly during the dry and windy season.
