Dimapur, Jan. 4 (EMN): North East Executive Council (NEEC) of the Janata Dal United (JD-U) has condemned the decision of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) for its decision to go ahead with the submission of the proposed Citizenship Amendment Bill 2016 to the parliament on January 7.
A press release appended by the chairman of NEEC, Senchumo Lotha, and the general secretary of JDU, Afaque Ahmed Khan, stated that the report in its present form was haphazardly wrapped up despite strong opposition from almost all the stakeholders.
“The report is arbitrarily summed up rejecting all amendments moved by the different members and is therefore bereft of all rationality and does not intend to serve the interest of the indigenous people of Assam as well as the Northeast,” the updates stated.
Stating that the JDU will not support the Bill both inside and outside the parliament and see to it that the proposed Bill be withdrawn for the benefit of the affected people, the note mentioned that JDU would continue to uphold the decision taken on July 8, 2018, during the national executive meeting in Delhi which resolved to oppose the Bill.
The updates further added that JDU would join hands with likeminded political parties and support organisations like North East students’ Organisation (NESO) and All Assam Students’ Union (ASSU), who are championing the cause in opposition of the said bill.
