Nagaland election 2023: Janata Dal United expels its candidate from party; threatens legal action
The Janata Dal United (JD-U) on Friday expelled its member Kitoho S Rotokha from the party, five days after it declared him as the candidate to contest from 5 Ghaspani-II Assembly Constituency (AC) in the upcoming Nagaland Assembly election.
The move came hours after Rotokha resigned from the JD(U) and joined the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas).
Condemning Rotokha’s anti-party activities, the JD(U), in a press communiqué, stated that it will initiate appropriate legal action against him for tarnishing the image of the JDU Nagaland.
The party also expressed shock over the resolutions taken by “some so-called JD(U) state office bearers” at an “unauthorised meeting” to resign en masse from the party, saying that the state unit’s General Secretary Imsumongba Pongen is very much part of the party and didn’t head the meeting as alleged.
Except for Rotokha, the other so-called state executives mentioned in the circular are not approved by the party’s national office, and so their appointments are invalid, claimed the JD(U), adding that there is no “Camping Director” post, which it said ‘amounts to misusing its good image, for which necessary action shall be initiated against the culprits.
Refuting false allegation leveled against the JD(U) Nagaland president Senchumo NSN Lotha, it said he has the unflinching support and blessing of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and party president Rajiv Ranjan Singh, who is also an MP.
“This very confidence of the party High Command is absolute and no vested interest can destroy this faith upon Lotha by the party High Command,” read the statement, adding that he is capable and will continue to lead the party in Nagaland as well as the Northeast India.
The party went on to say that ‘the state unit under the leadership of Lotha, vice president Hatpha Wang, general secretary Imsumongba Pongen and others are the sole guardian of the Janata Dal United Nagaland and they shall continue to have the full support of the party’s national office’.
State Janata Dal United free to ally with NDPP, BJP
Meanwhile, the JD(U) Nagaland announced in a press communique that the High Command of the JD(U) has “granted regional autonomy to the state unit to forge a post-poll alliance with any political party including NDPP and BJP according to the convenience of the state unit of Janata Dal United in so far as it can serve the greater interest of the welfare of the people of Nagaland”.
“The JD(U) Nagaland would like to once again reiterate its stand to continue without having any pre-poll alliance although some like-minded political parties are trying approaching to forge an alliance with JD(U),” it stated.
While informing that more than 25 applicants have already sought its ticket and more candidates are expected, the JD(U) said it is determined “to contest only in winnable constituencies so as to concentrate its resources and time”.
