Dimapur, April 10: The Konyak Union is officially the world record holder for the “Largest Traditional Konyak Dance.”

The union received the official communication from the Guinness World Records authorities on Tuesday night, four days after more than four thousand Konyak women in traditional attire danced and sang a ceremonial song for five minutes and two seconds in an attempt to enter the world record book.

The KU informed in a statement on Wednesday that it is proud to announce that it is the Guinness World Record holder for the title of “Largest Traditional Konyak Dance” consisting of 4,687 participants. “The approval for the setting of the said record was received on the 9th of April, 2019 at 9:01 pm,” read the statement.

“The largest traditional Konyak dance consists of 4,687 participants, and was achieved by The Konyak Union (India) in Mon, Nagaland, India, on 5 April 2019,” read the approval letter from the Guinness World Records.

“The Konyak Union would like to thank all the participants, organisers and well-wishers for their contribution and support in accomplishing this great achievement,” read the statement from the KU.

KU president Manlip Konyak told Eastern Mirror that after the official attempt on April 5 during the Aoleang cum mini-Hornbill festival at Mon Town, the video clip of the dance was sent to the head office apart from the Guinness World Records representatives (from North East Zone Cultural Centre) who witnessed the attempt.

“The approval for the record came on April 9 from the head office; we are very happy and thankful to the women who took part in the dance,” said Konyak.

He informed that the official certificate was sent via an email. “We are waiting for the elections to get over, after which a ceremony will be held in celebration of this feat,” he said.

It may be mentioned that Nagaland set the Guinness World Record for largest electric guitar ensemble on January 12, 2013 when 368 guitarists assembled at the Agri Expo site in Dimapur to perform Guns N’ Roses’ famous cover of Bob Dylan’s Knocking on Heaven’s Door.
