Inter-School Boys U-16 Cricket Tournament underway in Kohima

NCA and KDCA officials, along with U-16 players, gather ahead of Saturday’s matches in Kohima.

KOHIMA — The Inter-School Boys U-16 Cricket Tournament 2024, being organised by the Kohima District Cricket Association (KDCA) under the aegis of the Nagaland Cricket Association (NCA), is underway at the TM Government Higher Secondary School ground.

According to an update, six schools are participating in the tournament, and the inaugural programme of the tournament was held on March 23, chaired by Kenei Sekhose, general secretary of KDCA.

Keviselhou Sekhose, Chairman of the NCA Women’s Selection Sub-Committee, represented the NCA as the special guest at the inaugural programme and congratulated the Kohima District Cricket Association on organising an inter-school tournament after a long gap.

He stated that organising grassroots level matches, such as inter-school tournaments, is the best way to promote and develop players in the state. He challenged the players to take up the sport of cricket seriously and make a career out of it.

He mentioned that about INR 3-4 crore is earned annually by players from Nagaland as match fees for participating in various tournaments organised by the Board of Control for Cricket in India. He also declared the tournament open.

In the first match played between Government High School PWD and Chandmari Higher Secondary School, Government High School PWD won the toss and elected to bat but were bowled out for a paltry 23 runs in 7 overs.

Pukei Lamnyuo of Chandmari Higher Secondary School took 8 wickets, conceding only 6 runs in his 3 overs.

Chandmari Higher Secondary School chased the target of 24 runs in just 4 overs, winning the match by 10 wickets. Pukei Lamnyuo was named the Man of the Match for his exceptional bowling performance.

In the second match played between Government Middle School Orphanage, Seithogei and Mewi School, Government Middle School won the toss and elected to bat, scoring 160/5 in 20 overs.

Epha Konyak scored 47 runs, and Tachuye Trakha contributed 23 runs. Bishal Das of Mewi School took 2 wickets, conceding 30 runs in his 4 overs.

Chasing a target, Mewi School was bowled out for 58 runs in 17.1 overs.

The 11-year-old leg-spinner Sangtsulen of Government Middle School took 4 wickets for 7 runs in 4 overs. He was supported by another 11-year-old off-spinner, Elensü, who took 3 wickets for 5 runs in 2 overs.

Sangtsulen was named the Man of the Match for his impressive bowling figures.
