Dimapur, March 29 (EMN): American semiconductor chip maker Intel on Monday announced the new 12th Gen Intel Core i9-12900KS “Special Edition” CPU. The company claims that the new chip is “the world’s fastest desktop processor” with a boosted clock speed of 5.5GHz.

“Intel continues to push the envelope for desktop gaming with the new 12th Gen Intel Core i9-12900KS processor. Based on Intel’s 12th Gen performance hybrid architecture, this processor can hit 5.5 GHz on up to two cores for the first time, giving the most extreme gamers the ability to maximize performance,” wrote Marcus Kennedy, general manager of gaming, creator and esports segment at Intel.

The unlocked i9-12900KS processor shares similar architecture to the Core i9-12900K, the current Intel flagship, with 16 cores (eight performance cores and eight efficient cores) and 24 threads, and 30MB L3 cache memory. However, the new Intel chip is considerably faster with clock speed of 5.5GHz with a base power of 150 W. In comparison, the old i9-12900K could only do 5.2GHz with 125W base power.

Other features include Intel Adaptive Boost Technology for improved gaming performance, PCIe Gen 5.0/4.0 support and DDR5 4800 MT/s  and DDR4 3200 MT/s support.

The company confirmed that the new chipset is compatible with existing Z690 motherboards, however, users are recommended to update BIOS to the latest settings.

Intel’s new 5.5GHz i9-12900KS will be available for purchase starting April 5 at $739 (around INR 55,800).
