India’s Covid-19 death toll breaches 5 lakh; becomes third country in world to cross the mark

Dimapur, Feb. 4 (EMN):
The total number of deaths due to the Covid-19 pandemic crossed five lakh in India on Friday, becoming the third country in the world to breach the mark after the United States and Brazil.

The country’s death toll climbed to 5,00,055 with 1,072 fresh fatalities, according to the data provided by the Union Health Ministry at 8 am on Friday

The number of deaths crossed one lakh in October 2020 and two lakh in April last year before it breached three lakh in May and four lakh in July the same year.

According to the Worldometers, the US has the highest number of fatalities due to the pandemic with over 9.2 lakh fatalies, followed by Brazil with over 6.3 lakh.

Meanwhile, India reported 1,49,394 (1.49 lakh) new Covid infections in the last 24 hours, taking the country’s tally to 4,19,52,712, while the active cases declined to 14,35,569.

The cumulative recoveries increased to 4,00,17,088 with recovery of 2,46,674  patients in the last 24 hours.

Meanwhile, the total number of Covid vaccines administered in the country so far has crossed 168.47 crore.
