On the occasion of the 72nd anniversary of India’s Republic Day, the President of India, Ram Nath Kovind, has greeted Dr. SC Jamir, former Nagaland chief minister and governor of Odisha. Kovind has sent Jamir a letter on Republic Day recalling about the latter’s contributions towards the country.

“I am pleased to recall that you held the highest constitutional post of Odisha state as governor,” wrote Kovind to Jamir.

According to the President, Jamir has discharged constitutional duties of his post while maintaining the dignity of the position and gave his priority to the “service and welfare of the people of the state”.

“You nurtured relations between the centre and the state and have played an important role in strengthening our federal structure,” the letter read adding “It is a matter of great pleasure that you retired during my presidency after making successful and invaluable contributions.”

Describing Jamir as a man of letters with a graceful personality who is “enriched with diverse experiences”, Kovind stated that the veteran politician would “always remain a source of inspiration for our society and the country”.

Further extending his best wishes for Jamir’s health and long life, Kovind said he was sending a balloon decorated with the emblem of Indian Republic as a memento to him on the occasion.

Before retiring after serving Odisha, Jamir had served as the chief minister of Nagaland. He had also served as the governor of Maharashtra, Gujarat and Goa.

He was awarded the third-largest civilian award in India, Padma Bhushan in 2020 for his work in public affairs.
