IMPHAL, OCTOBER 11: Rongmei Naga Youth Organisation (RNYO) has called indefinite bandh along Imphal-Jiribam sector of National Highway 37 from October 11 midnight following failure of the Manipur Government to repair the 222km stretch of the road within the “stipulated time”.
Stating that even the Centre had once assured that necessary steps have been taken to repair the NH-37 within 100 days, RNYO president Singamlung Dangmei announced to call the bandh and said the highway is the lifeline of many people.
The RNYO had urged the State Government to initiate repairing work of 4-kilometre stretch along the NH-37 within a week. Not only did the State Government fail to undertake any step but also remained silent over the people’s earnest demand, he said. The decision to call the indefinite bandh was taken not only by Rongmei community but by all the people settled in the area, he added. Meanwhile, Information Centre for Hill Areas Manipur also announced to support the movement launched by RNYO, according to its president N Rajendro.
Mention may be made that Transporters and Drivers Union (TDC) also had announced to cease their usual services in protest against the deplorable condition of the highway. According to reports available here, a joint team of TDC and state PWD have conducted an assessment of the highly dilapidated sections of the highway on Saturday.
