Incessant rain triggers landslide in Manipur’s Tamenlong

Imphal, May 20 (EMN): Continuous rain in the last eight days triggered a landslide in Tamenglong district, which borders Assam and cut off the road connectivity between Tamenglong and Tamei, locals said.

The landslide occurred between Kabonram and Machenglong and carried away the road measuring around 30 feet on Thursday, people familiar with the development said.

Manipur has been witnessing incessant rainfall since the last eight days causing all the major rivers in the state to flow at warning levels, submerging many habitation and agriculture fields.

Even though rainfall stopped on Friday, the major rivers — Imphal, Iril and Nambul –, which passes through the thickly populated areas of Imphal West and Imphal East districts were still flowing at warning level at 5 pm on Friday, according to state water resource department report.

Kangpokpi, which is the birth place of Imphal river, received 16 mm of rainfall on Friday.

Flash floods has also affected many low lying areas including office premises and residential areas under Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishnupur districts. On Sunday, the sudden rise of the water level of Jiri river washed away four houses besides submerging many houses in Jiribam district which borders Assam’s Silchar district.
