A scientific housing system is a vital aspect of a profitable farming system. The housing requirement for any livestock and poultry varies with the climatic condition of a place. Housing should be constructed in such a way that it offers maximum comfort and protection. The animals or birds should be protected from direct sunlight, humidity, rain, cold and windy condition. A good housing system provide ample provision for adequate space for feeding and exercise, fresh air through proper ventilation and sufficient sunlight.
Basic Guidelines for Selection of Site for Livestock and Poultry House Construction
1. The site should always be on a dry and elevated land for effective drainage.
2. A good source of water supply should be there.
3. The site should preferably not be by the side of national highway or main market road.
4. The site should not be near a market, hospital, school, residential areas, slaughter houses, factories etc.
5. The site should be preferably located where veterinary aids are available.
6. There should be provision for easy electricity connection.
Basic Guidelines for Construction of Livestock and Poultry House
1. Direction of the House: it should be in east –west direction to avoid direct sunlight.
2. Roof: it should be make with CGI sheet for durability and comfort.The roof should be slope, overhang should be atleast 2ft or more to offer protection from sun and rain
3. Wall: it should be hard and durable preferably made with cement concrete
4. Floor: must be made of cement concrete with proper gradient to facilitate drainage. Floor should be made non-slippery
5. Ventilation: it is a must in all livestock and poultry houses for smooth flow of fresh air and to avoid air pollution and dampness
A good housing system can save the livestock and poultry farmers from avoiding many diseases conditions and bring about maximum production from minimal input which can improve their economic status.
