KOHIMA: The ongoing India's International Movement to Unite Nations (IIMUN), Nagaland conference aims at creating a platform for young students to hone their public speaking skills, express themselves, debate on world issues and possibly bring a solution to problems, said Kevino Savino, Dean of Student Affairs, G Rio School on Friday.
The three-day conference, which began in Kohima on Thursday, will conclude on Saturday. G Rio School has been hosting the event since 2017.
"The IIMUN's motive is to create leaders and provide a platform for students from different schools," Savino told Eastern Mirror.
‘Through the event, students learn so much. They are allotted topics and committees representing different countries, just like the United Nations model,’ she said, adding that students will undertake research studies on allotted topics, work on them, and bring issues to discuss, debate, and maybe resolve in the committee sessions.
While maintaining that the event emphasises on helping students improve their public speaking skills, she said it also provides young minds a platform to voice out, speak out, discuss and find solutions for issues that people are facing locally, nationally or internationally.

‘When it comes to public speaking, standing up for one’s rights or bringing up issues, we should not be silent listeners; we should be able to voice out. To bring change in the society is through the youth; they have to come forward,’ she said.
Speaking at the event, Charge D' Affairs of IIMUN, Deepaknarayan S Bharadwaj, highlighted that the movement is the world's largest youth-run organisation that conducts three-day conferences for students of ages 13 to 19 in 35 countries across 220 cities.
At the conference, the students 'role play' national and international leaders and discuss several topics of national and international importance; learn skills and leadership, diplomacy and public speaking as well as make new friends for life, he said, adding that students will come up with solutions to various topics by the end of the three-day conference.
Sharing her experience at the event, Leah Imchen, a Class 12 student of Delhi Public School in Dimapur, said that she looks forward to developing her public speaking skills and leave the conference with an open mind.
Kevivor, a Class 12 student of G Rio School in Kohima, who is attending the conference for the first time, also said the experience so far was remarkable. Maintaining that the various sessions of the event were educational, he said he was looking forward to making the most out of it.
