Dimapur, July 7 (EMN): Tuensang unit of the International Human Rights Council (IHRC) organised a ‘solidarity programme for Aboi gang rape victim’ with the Eastern Naga Women Organisation (ENWO) as special invitee at Lümtüm Kuh in Tuensang town on July 6.

An update from IHRC Tuensang stated that short speeches were delivered by its president BM Yanchu and the advisor of ENWO Alemla Chang on rape awareness and victimisation of rape victim in the Naga society.

It stated that Yanchu spoke on value of women in the society and how the advancement of technology has also contributed to the violence against women which was hitherto unknown to the Naga society.

Yanchu has strongly condemned the incident of gang rape at Aboi on June 20 and assured to fight for justice for the minor victim.

Speaking out against the incompetency of articles enshrined in the constitution for protection of women in the Naga society due to pressure from different angles, Alemla lamented that ‘true justice’ is not delivered to the victims.

She encouraged the participants to spread awareness on violence against women and the hardship faced by women at the grassroots.

The programme was chaired by Yangtsala Sangtam, while the welcome speech was delivered by IHRC joint secretary B Imlong. The Bible reading and silent prayer in honour of the victim was led by its vice secretary B Yemlong Chaba.

The programme culminated with a benediction said by K Lakiumong Yimchunger.

In a delayed report, Mon unit of the NGOs’ Forum has strongly condemned the June 20 incident in Mon where a 15 year-old minor girl was sexually assaulted by six boys.

The organisation president, Hamkai Arolim, and the secretary, Heatwang M, stated that such an act was intolerable as people are to respect and protect one another. Stating that simply getting the culprit arrested was not enough, the organisation has appealed to the law enforcing agency to deliver justice at the earliest possible time.

Stating that nothing could be done to recover the loss and pain, the organisation has assured to stand by the family in order to instil a sense of comfort and security. It further requested the government to show an act of kindness by compensating the victim.
