IGNOU Mokokchung reigns supreme at inter-college badminton tournament

KOHIMA — A two-day inter-college badminton tournament, which was underway in Kohima, culminated on Saturday with IGNOU Mokokchung bagging the overall champion title.

The semi-finals and finals took place at the Indoor Badminton Stadium, Officer’s Hill, Kohima.

In the mixed doubles event, Watisungla and Wapangmeren from IGNOU Mokokchung emerged as the winners, while Imnawapang and Yalimenla from Fazl Ali College, Mokokchung, secured the runner-up position.

Sunepbenla Imchen from Fazl Ali College clinched victory in the girls’ singles, with Watisungla from IGNOU Mokokchung securing the runner-up position. In the boys’ singles, Wapangmeren A Jamir of IGNOU Mokokchung emerged as the winner, while Sewang Konyak from IGNOU Dimapur secured the runner-up spot.

The “True Fighter” award was presented to Renchamo Yanthan from Kros College, Kohima (male) and Merari Nbung from Kohima Science College, Jotsoma (female).

Each winner received a prize of INR 20,000, while each runner-up was awarded INR 10,000. The recipients of the “True Fighter” award, both male and female, received INR 7,500 each.

Colonel Rohit Jakhar, Commandant of the 45th Assam Rifles, Chieswema Battalion, who inaugurated the two-day tournament, presented the awards to all the winners and sponsored the “True Fighter” award.

The inaugural inter-college badminton tournament was organised by the College of Arts and Technology (CAT) Nerhe-Phezha, Kohima, on the theme ‘Challenge the Champion in You’.

A total of 32 players from various colleges in Nagaland participated in the tournament. Participants represented Alder College Kohima, Fazl Ali College, Kros College, Kohima College, IGNOU Mokokchung, IGNOU Dimapur, Unity College, Don Bosco College Kohima, College of Arts and Technology, Kohima Science College, Sazolie College, and Modern College.
