Dimapur, Sep. 21 (EMN):
Citizens of Dimapur have expressed concern over idols being dumped on the Dhansiri Bridge near Urban Haat in Dimapur by the devotees after the Vishwakarma Puja celebration.

They said random dumping of biodegradable idols on the roadside instead of immersing it in water shows sheer apathy towards keeping the city clean.

‘We found around three idols dumped on the bridge, which is used by pedestrians. We understand that the idols are immersed in the water after the celebration but randomly dumping on the roadside used by pedestrians shows apathy and lack of civic sense,’ the Better Dimapur group said.

It was informed that a maintenance drive was undertaken in the area just recently.

‘We had immersed few idols dumped on the roadside as it was blocking pedestrians’ way,’ one member of the group informed.

They also lamented that they had planted some plants brought from outside the state for beautification of the city last month but had gone missing. They requested the public to maintain cleanliness and help beautify the city.

It may be mentioned that in several Indian cities, civic bodies undertake cleansing work after idol immersions by fishing out structures and puja materials as the paint on the idols could pollute the water and affects fish and other aquatic lives.
