Dimapur, Feb. 23 (EMN): South Korean automaker Hyundai Motor Co aims to make a statement in the electric vehicle (EV) space with the unveiling of its newest EV car, the Ioniq 5 compact crossover.
On Tuesday, Hyundai launched the Ioniq 5, the production version of the 45 Concept showcased at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show. The compact crossover EV is based on the company’s new electric vehicle-only platform that uses Hyundai’s in-house battery module technology.
The Ioniq 5 is the first vehicle from Hyundai to be designed and built from the ground up as an electric car, the first to showcase the automaker’s new Electric-Global Modular Platform. The vehicle has been designed for maximum interior space with a wide wheelbase of 118.1 inches. The Ioniq 5 EV boasts features like drive-by-wire and steer-by-wire technologies as well as a top speed of 185 kmph.
Hyundai claims that the Ioniq 5 will have a maximum range of about 480 km (298 miles), adding that the EV has rapid charge technology (using a 350 kW charger) that will enable it to charge from 0% to 80% in just 18 minutes. The Ioniq 5 variant with the larger battery pack and the all-wheel-drive system can do 0-100 kmph in 5.2 seconds.
The company in a statement said that it will offer two battery pack options — 58-kilowatt-hour (kWh) or 72.6 kWh.
According to industry tracker SNE Reasearch, the launch of the Ioniq 5 EV is part of Hyundai’s long-term goal to capture 10% of the global EV sales by 2025.
Hyundai has not revealed the prices for the upcoming Ioniq 5 EV but it is expected to be more than INR 37 lakh.
