DIMAPUR, OCTOBER 5
The Konyak Student’s Union (KSU) is saddened by the deplorable condition of the road leading to Wangkhao College and Industrial Training Institute (ITI) Mon and immense hardship facing the students while walking on the road to attend their classes.
Poor attendance in class on account of the deplorable road condition is also one of the major factors directly affecting the career of the students, the students’ body said in a release issued by its president Loungai Wangnao and assistant general secretary Hamshen Konyak today.
In the backdrop of this, the union has requested the Minister for Road and Bridges to kindly intervene and heed the plea of the student community for inclusion of the college roads project under any budget source without delay.
In continuance of so many appeals in the past and for permanent solution, the union said it is compelled to demand for inclusion, sanction and immediate commencement of construction of the road from Mon town to the institutions by fully black topping it on or before the next rainy season.
Reminding that the students in the past had boycotted their classes and appealed to the department concerned for construction of the roads, the KSU lamented that till date nothing has been initiated and the condition of the roads still at their worst today.
Basing on the complaints of the agitated students and staff from both the institutions, the union recalled that in the past it had appealed to the district administration for maintenance of the road which is holding back the students from having access to their classes. It said the road becomes totally unmotorable during summer.
The union appreciated the DPDB for positive response and initiating the temporary maintenance of the roads by filling the potholes with stones. However, it said such temporary maintenance will only last for this dry season.
Also, basing on the detailed project report received in the year 2013, the union expressed its utmost discontentment on how the work was being supervised, executed and implemented. “Neither the construction works were carried out as per the DPR nor the government had investigated on its mismanagement but instead completion certificate was allotted,” it noted. The union warned that it will not tolerate such corruption either by the contractor or the government in future.
The KSU sought to explain that Wangkhao College and the ITI Mon, the two most important institutions of Mon district, are the assets of the district and the entire Konyak populace in general. It also stated that though the institutions are located in Mon, it shouldn’t be considered the responsibility of the MLA concerned but the responsibility should be jointly shouldered by all the nine Konyak elected members.
In this regard, the KSU appealed to all the Konyak elected members to retrospect and introspect on the present condition of stagnancy that prevails in the system today. “Such state and condition needs joint efforts from all section of leaders in understanding the common problem and issues concerning the educational infrastructural stagnancy and development that exist in the land of Konyaks,” it said.
