Houses destroyed by fire at Changtongya

A major fire broke out in the wee hours on Sunday in Changtongya town. The fire razed down a two storeyed building which housed two rice hotels, a residential flat, one small shop and a cobbler’s shop. Another adjacent building which was occupied by grocery store and another rice hotel were also destroyed by fire.Properties including the grocery items worth more than Rs. 40 lakhs were destroyed by the fire incident. No human casualties have been reported. The exact cause of the fire incident was not known, thought electric short circuit might be the probable cause of the incident. Citizens of the town including 11 IRB personnel posted at Changtongya town help doused the fire raged for more than two hours.
SDO (C) Changtongya M.S. Thangpong who was in the spot during arrival of the fire tender party from Mokokchung felt regretted and said that the fire destruction could have been minimized, if the fire tender service stationed at Changtongya headquarter permanently to deal with such occurrence.
Meanwhile, DC Mokokchung on February 9 visited the spot at Changtongya and gave Rs. 18,500 to the victims for immediate assistance/relief. DC also directed the SDO (C) Changtongya to make necessary assessment of the loss of properties and to forward the matter to the government.
