DIMAPUR — A hornbill sighting near Surhoba village in Phek district turned into a conservation scare after shots were allegedly fired at the protected bird, prompting the Chakhesang Youth Front (CYF) to issue a crackdown warning.
In a circular issued on Wednesday, the organisation termed the alleged shooting a serious violation of existing standing resolutions and a direct threat to ongoing conservation efforts in the area.
The CYF reminded the public that the hornbill—held in deep cultural significance by the Chakhesang and wider Naga community—is not only a protected species but also a symbol of identity, tradition and coexistence with nature.
Its preservation, it stated, is both a cultural and ecological responsibility.
The youth body cautioned that any attempt to hunt, harm or disturb the bird is strictly prohibited, and warned that violators will face stringent disciplinary action in accordance with the Chakhesang Public Organisation (CPO) standing resolutions, including the public disclosure of offenders’ names if necessary.

It further stated that hunters will also be prosecuted under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, which carries severe penalties, including imprisonment for offences involving protected wildlife.
Calling for heightened vigilance, the CYF urged all units and members to ensure that no hunting of hornbills—or any other wildlife—takes place under any circumstance.
“Wildlife protection is a collective responsibility,” the circular stressed, adding that strict compliance with CPO resolutions is mandatory and any breach will invite “serious consequences.”
