Home away from home: Senior citizens find hideaway in Mokokchung

To help senior citizens of the community and function to the fullness of their ability a daycare center for the elderly was inaugurated by Imolemba Jamir, president of the Ao Senden on Saturday in Dilong ward in Mokokchung on Saturday.
Although the building was completed in 2005 it could go functionally only now, with financial assistants of Rs. 10 lakhs from the social Welfare department, donation from Ao officers and well-wishers, land donor Dr. Sangkalong and his family and the relentless efforts of the Mokokchung District Pensioners’ Association.The daycare center for the elderly is located in the center of the town, near the pensioners’ office below the town’s post office. The center is managed by social service society of Mokokchung and will open from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm every Monday, Tuesday, and Friday.
The facilities provided in the center include daily monitoring of blood sugar and blood pressure, weekly normal exercise session as per requirement and nutritional back-up by a physiotherapist, weekly dental service, monthly physical check up with the help of volunteer doctors, free medicine and nutritional back-up, regular counseling/seminar on various fields, beds for those who want to rest during day, comfortable seating areas for interaction, reading and writing areas, workshop for those who are interested, occupational therapy and light afternoon meal.
Speaking during the inauguration as the guest of honor, Imolemba said that “As an elder persons, we should not be ashamed being aging. If we understand the word of God, that is enough,’ he said.
Saying that the elders shoulder responsibility to advising the youth and offering them great experiences for welfare of the society, he urged them to let the centre be a place to share knowledge and advice to those who seek knowledge.
During the program President of the Mokokchung District Pensioners’ Association, I.B Meren was the first member to register in this Day Care center.
