DIMAPUR — In the warm afterglow of Hokato Hotozhe Sema’s historic Bronze medal win in men’s shot put F57 at the Paris Paralympics 2024, Diethono Nakhro, the state commissioner for persons with disabilities, has reminded that Nagaland can become a powerhouse in producing para-athletes.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the commissioner said that Hokato’s feat in Paris is a testament to his hard work, dedication, and unyielding spirit, representing a proud moment for India and Nagaland.

“Hokato’s accomplishment has set a new benchmark for athletes across the nation, particularly for young disabled sportspersons, who now see him as a shining role model. Recognising his outstanding achievement, the state government has announced a reward of INR 1.5 crore for the Paralympian.

“This commendable gesture highlights the government’s commitment to promoting excellence in sports, especially within the disability community. Such support not only boosts the morale of individual athletes but also sends a powerful message about the value of inclusion in sports”, the statement read.

Diethono underscored that the Hokato’s groundbreaking victory was a reflection of the immense talent and potential of young disabled athletes in Nagaland.

“As the state celebrates this historic win, it is vital to recognise the urgent need for more initiatives to promote and support disability sports. By investing in infrastructure, training facilities, and funding for para-athletes, Nagaland can cultivate many more world-class competitors who can reach the pinnacle of international competition, just as Hokato has.

“Let this moment serve as a call to action for greater inclusivity and representation in sports, as well as a celebration of Hokato Hotozhe Sema’s milestone achievement on the world stage. The future of disability sports is bright, and with the right support, Nagaland will become a powerhouse in producing top para-athletes in the years to come”, she said.

Paralympics and Olympics

In a separate statement, Diethono noted that some media outlets and government officials have erroneously referred to Paralympian Hokato’s Bronze medal win as an Olympic win.

“We would like to respectfully clarify that Hokato’s achievement took place at the Paralympic Games, not the Olympic Games. The Paralympics is the premier international sporting event for athletes with disabilities, held alongside the Olympics.

“Hokato’s historic victory at the Paralympic Games is an incredible milestone, and we celebrate him for bringing honour and pride to Nagaland and the nation. We kindly request that media and officials ensure this distinction is correctly acknowledged in their reports and messages,” the statement read.
