Gauhati High Court, Kohima Bench, on Thursday reserved its judgment on a writ petition filed by former Nagaland University professor challenging his compulsory retirement from the university
DIMAPUR — The Gauhati High Court, Kohima Bench, on Thursday reserved its judgment on a writ petition filed by former Nagaland University professor Sarat Chandra Yenisetti challenging his compulsory retirement from the university.
Justice N Unni Krishnan Nair concluded the hearing in WP(C)/100/2026 after hearing the counsel for the parties at length. The parties have been given liberty to file their written submissions on October 9.
Yenisetti was compulsorily retired by Nagaland University (NU) through an order dated June 2, 2025, following disciplinary proceedings arising from allegations of misconduct. The allegations relate to an incident in November 2024, in which Yenisetti was accused of verbally abusing a group of master’s students and allegedly manhandling a female Assistant Professor from the same department.
Yenisetti has challenged the legality of the disciplinary process and the subsequent compulsory-retirement order.

At an earlier hearing on June 16, his counsel submitted that the inquiry had been conducted under Rule 14 of the Central Civil Services (Classification, Control and Appeal) Rules, 1965. The counsel argued that the rules had not been adopted by Nagaland University and, therefore, the inquiry conducted under them was void ab initio.
The counsel further argued that compulsory retirement was not a penalty and that its imposition under Statute 28(2) of Nagaland University was illegal.
