Diphu/Guwahati, Sep. 21 (PTI): Two persons were on Tuesday arrested in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district with a consignment of 1.5 kg heroin, estimated to be worth nearly INR 8 crore in the international market, a day after another batch of 412 gm of the same drug was confiscated in the area, a police officer said.

A couple from Nagaland, Besii Mao and Kaiha Mao, was apparently delivering the contraband from Manipur to Guwahati, the officer said.

Acting on a tip-off, the police launched an operation at Khatkati in Bokajan police station area and got hold of the contraband hidden in 80 soap boxes, Sub-Divisional Police Officer John Das told reporters.

The couple, who was travelling with an infant, was taken into custody, he stated.

Taking to Twitter, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma congratulated the Assam Police for back-to-back drug haul in the state.

“In a major operation this morning @karbianglongpolice has recovered 1 kg +heroin at Khatkhati. Kudos to @assampolice. Keep up the good work,” he added.
