Hectic preparations underway to observe Anglo-Manipur war

  • IMPHAL — Hectic preparations are underway for the Khongjom Day observation to be held at the Khongjom War Memorial at Khebaching, Khongjom, 35 km south of Imphal in Manipur’s Thoubal district on April 23.

  • Khongjom Day is observed in remembrance of the brave sons of the soil, who fought valiantly in the Anglo-Manipur War of 1891.

  • Generally, the day’s observation starts with a guard of honour with gun salute at the Samadhi of Paona Brajabashi, who sacrificed his life during the final battle of Anglo-Manipuri War in the year 1891, followed by floral tribute with rituals at Khongjom River.

  • Khongjom day is observed in Manipur on April 23 every year to pay tribute to the Manipuris who fell in the Anglo-Manipuri war of 1891.

  • Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla and Chief Secretary Prashant Kumar Singh would attend the programme.

  • Following a sankirtan by artistes of Manipur State Kala Academy, the state governor, Ajay Kumar Bhalla, would lead in floral tribute at the Khongjom War Memorial and the statue of ‘Paona Brajabashi’ along with floral tribute and rituals at Khongjom River, which flows at the foothill of Khebaching.

  • Renowned theatre group Rup Mahal Theatre would present a drama on ‘Khongjom Lal’ (Khongjom War) along with many other programmes.

  • In an effort to hold the observation successfully, the state government has appealed to the public to attend the programnme so as to pay befitting tribute to the brave heroes, who made supreme sacrifice in their fight to safeguard the freedom of their motherland.

  • The state transport department has arranged buses to enable the public attend the observation by providing free rides from Imphal to Khongjom Khebaching.

  • Meanwhile, the General Administrative Department (Welfare Section) has requested all the administrative secretaries and head of departments to instruct all the government officials and staff to attend the programme.
