Officials, village leaders, and beneficiaries pose with distributed tools and machinery during the launching of Hebolimi VDVK at Hebolimi village, Zunheboto District, on November 13.

DIMAPUR — The Nagaland Beekeeping and Honey Mission (NBHM), in collaboration with TRIFED, Ministry of Tribal Affairs, organised the launching programme of Hebolimi Van Dhan Vikas Kendra (VDVK)-cum-distribution of machineries and tools at Hebolimi village, Zunheboto district, on November 13.

On the occasion, the NBHM and the Hebolimi village community, in the presence of the programme dignitaries, also observed the Tribal Pride Day, i.e., Janjatiya Gaurav Varsh, the 150th birth anniversary of Birsa Munda.

The programme was attended by the special guest, Obed Quinker, chairman of the NBHM. He said that the VDVK scheme under the Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation of India (TRIFED) is specifically designed for tribal farmers. He noted that many people in Nagaland are migrating to urban towns for better healthcare and education but stressed the importance of reverting to their roots.

Quinker encouraged the gathering to take advantage of the government's initiatives, stating, "When government agencies come to you at the grassroots level, it's your duty to grab the opportunity and transform your social, economic, and overall lifestyle."

He reminisced about the past, saying, "Our places were once filled with rich flora and fauna, but today they're gone due to our mismanagement. The jungles, once teeming with life, are now empty."

Quinker encouraged and challenged the Hebolimi VDVK to strive to be a model for others, citing the strategic location of their village. He encouraged competition among VDVKs like Hebolimi, Ighanumi, Iphonumi, and Ghathashi in the district.

Kuputo Shohe, chairman of the Nagaland State Mineral Development Corporation (NSMDC), who attended the programme as guest of honour, emphasised unity and collective growth, noting that the initiative reflects the principle of “working together and growing together”.

Shohe said that all these efforts made by the NBHM and leaders of VDVK Hebolimi village must be valued as a rare opportunity. He exhorted the Hebolimi VDVK members to be sincere, dedicated, and responsible in their work by actively carrying out all activities so as to make an exemplary and the best VDVK.

The programme was also attended by Vikheho Y Swu, former MLA, who expressed hope that the vision of Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio must be achieved through various schemes in the state.

Swu encouraged the public, particularly the various self-help groups (SHGs) under VDVK, to embrace this opportunity and move “towards economic excellence”, aligning with global progress. He further emphasised economic self-sustenance and urged everyone to follow the principle of “Work and eat”.

The deputy team leader of the NBHM spoke on the PMJVM scheme at length, highlighting the aims, objectives, role of VDVK, its activities, and its relevance for social and economic empowerment of the tribals by tapping and capitalising the Minor Forest Produce.

In his vote of thanks, Inaho Shohe, chairman of Hebolimi VDVK, expressed gratitude to the Nagaland Beekeeping and Honey Mission and TRIFED for providing the tool kits and machinery, which he said would enhance livelihood opportunities.

The programme was attended by village leaders such as GBs, village council authorities, and VDVK beneficiaries.
