IMPHAL, September 24: Two hours heavy rains wrecked havoc in parts of Churachandpur town in Manipur’s Churachandpur district headquarters, 65 km south of Imphal and its suburbs as water entered some residential areas and flooded roads, on Saturday afternoon. The rains lasting from 1.30 pm to 4 pm caused massive flooding in almost all the main routes in the hill town, reports reaching here claimed. The situation was grim in some areas of Thangpu carpentry works at near Damkam bazar, Simveng, Hmuia veng and several parts of new Lamka in the town. Some major residential and Agape and Omega rehabilitation centre at Khumujamba Meitei Leikai was also affected in the day’s seasonal rain. Besides overflowing the drains, water entered residential colonies in most part of the town. In Hmuia veng, footpath was totally submerged while roads turned into rivers for sometime as witnessed on September 18. As heavy rains inundated and further damaged the roads, there were traffic snarls in many key areas in almost all parts of the town. With huge inflows, the water level of Lanva, Lailam lui and Sielmat streams which passes through the town were swollen all of a sudden creating an alarming situation in the town, reports added.
