Heavy rains damage houses, crops in Manipur

Our Correspondent Imphal, April 2 (EMN): Heavy rains accompanied by hailstorm damaged many houses and crops in Manipur particularly in Churachandpur and Bishnupur districts since the last 24 hours. A santro car and a passenger diesel auto-rickshaw were reportedly damaged when branches of an uprooted tree was fallen to the ground near Churachandpur police station road on Tuesday evening. Life in state capital has also been affected by strong wind and hailstorms. There are reports of erratic power supply in other parts of the state as well. However, no casualties were reported till the filling of this report. Hailstorm wreaked havoc in many villages under Saikot, Singhat and Churachandpur sub-divisions. The hail which was started from April 1 and 2 damaged around 50 houses at Saljang, Thenmuol, M Shimol, Saipum, Mualpi and Misao Lhahvom, according to Chief Association of the Saikot area. Roofs of couple houses and crops were reportedly damaged on April 2 in Bishnupur district Bishnupur recieved highest rainfall (42.8mm) among all the districts of the state in the past 24 hours according to the daily weather report released by Directorate of Environment, Government of Manipur.Bishnupur is followed by Imphal East (16.2mm) and Tamenglong (15.9mm). The district administration sent officials to the devastated areas to take stock of the situation. Meanwhile, Secretary R Lalkaisanga of Saikot sub-division has urged the authority to provide necessary assistance.
