Heavy rain, thunderstorm expected in Nagaland, other northeastern states

DIMAPUR — Nagaland is likely to receive isolated heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds (40-50 kmph) from May 5 to the 7th, according to an update from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Saturday.

The report stated that strong southwesterly winds from Bay of Bengal to Northeast India are very likely to prevail at lower tropospheric levels on May 5 and 6, due to which fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall accompanied with isolated thunderstorm and lightning and gusty winds (40-50 kmph) is very likely over Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Sikkim, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura till May 9.

The report further stated that isolated heavy rainfall is very likely over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura during May 5 to the 7th and Sikkim on May 5. It also predicted isolated “very heavy” rainfall over Arunachal Pradesh on May 5; Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Tripura on May 5 and 6, and isolated extremely heavy rainfall over Meghalaya on May 6.

The district-wise prediction shows that all the districts of Nagaland are likely to experience thunderstorm and lightning along with gusty winds from May 5 to the 8th.
