Dimapur, Feb. 13 (EMN): Deputy commissioner, Kohima, Thejawelie Gregory Sote, has stressed on the need to have proper mindset and positive attitude towards people with disabilities. He was of the view that educating the communities and different stakeholders are necessary to address the needs of the people with disabilities.
Gregory stated this at a one day orientation programme on early identification and RPWD Act 2016 held in the conference hall of the Red Cross, Kohima, on February 13 for the ASHA and Anganwadi workers. He urged upon the gathering to give their time, attention, suggestions and directions on how to best manage the people with disabilities. He added that contribution of ASHA and Anganwadi workers are important as they are at the grassroots level and first contact point to any stakeholders.
Ms Diethono Nakhro, state disability commissioner, has stressed on the need to have better understanding and knowledge on disability by the grassroots level. She stated that constant learning through workshops and seminars are necessary to disseminate knowledge to prevent discrimination in the society.
She added that accessibility should also to be addressed by all government buildings and public places and ensure that laws and rules are set in proper places.
Ms Atoli, joint director of social welfare department, also spoke on the collaboration with different departments and private sectors, while A Patra spoke on ‘Introduction to Disability and Rights to Persons with Disabilities Act 2016,’ and Ms Sreeja Mitra spoke on ‘Early identification and intervention.’ Ms Monali spoke on ‘Prosthetics and orthotics,’ all speakers from National Institute of Locomotors Disability (NILD) spoke on various subjects of disability. Ms Adaphro Pfozhe and Ms Viesienuo Chusi from Cherry Blossoms spoke on ‘Inclusive education.’
Sankara Narayan from Bethel Masiha Church, Bethel Medical Centre, said the invocation and D Adani pronounced the vote of thanks.
The workshop was organised by National Institute of Orthopedically Disabilities (NIOD), Kolkata, in collaboration with social welfare department, CMO office, NHAK Kohima and Cherry Blossoms Society.
