DIMAPUR — As part of national oral cancer month, the dental unit of Naga Hospital Authority Kohima (NHAK) conducted an oral cancer screening camp at Mount Olive College, Kohima, on Tuesday.
The programme began with an invocation prayer said by the Chaplain, Newtoli Zhimomi and welcome address by the college’s principal, Swedezhonuo.
An update from the office of the chief medical officer (CMO), Kohima, stated that the resource person and district oral health officer, Dr. I Simon Sumi, highlighted on risk factors and prevention of oral cancer. He also spoke on the importance of early detection and diagnosis of oral cancer which is the best preventive remedy.
It stated that a total of 210 college students were screened. It added that free oral kits containing toothbrush, toothpaste and IEC materials were distributed.
Report stated that 27 students were given free consultation by the staff of Tobacco Cessation Centre namely Pele Khezhie and Achila Walling.
The dental team consisted of Dr. I Simon Sumi, Dr. Pfukrolo Koza, Dr. Neiphrezo Soriinuo, Dr. Kemezhunuo Shiiya and Dr. Lydia Imchen.
In a related programme, the National Oral Health Programme (NOHP), Mokokchung, in collaboration with Iva Healthcare Ltd. & Renascent Pharma, conducted a free dental camp at Government Middle School, Sabangya, on April 25.
An update from the CMO’s office stated that Dr. Sentirenla made aware on oral cancer and maintenance of good oral health. She also educated the students on the importance of practising good oral health habits, avoid the use of tobacco and on the outcomes of failure in maintaining proper oral hygiene.
She particularly made the students aware of the main cause responsible for oral cancer and other problems which might arise due to poor dental health.
The medical team was led by Dr. Taliwaba Ao, senior dental surgeon at IMDH. The staff of Sabangya PHC and teachers from GMS Sabangya assisted the medical team during the dental camp.
It stated that free oral hygiene kits containing toothbrush and toothpaste were distributed to the students on the occasion.
