MOKOKCHUNG — A five-day district handloom expo titled ‘Tana Bana,’ organised by the directorate of Industries and Commerce with District Industries Centre (DIC), Mokokchung, got underway at Mopungchuket public ground in Mokokchung district on Thursday. The district handloom expo is being funded by the Development Commissioner (Handloom), Ministry of Textile, Government of India.

The EAC of Kobulong, Seyievillie Pfukri, who inaugurated the expo, lauded the department of Industries and Commerce for organising the event to uplift the rural artisans.

“One of our unique identities can be traced back in our handloom, therefore, even after the culmination of the expo we should continue to promote the speciality of the area and bring it up to the mainstream market,” Pfukri said.

He also advised the artisans not to compromise the quality of their products for making a little profit but rather remain patient and slowly build a reputation to make their products into a brand.

Also asserting that the world today is giving much importance to traditional products, he urged the artisan to maintain the authenticity of their products so that others might recognise the brand. In this regard, he urged the participants to capitalise the traditional products by maintaining quality and making their product a brand trademark.

The functional manager of District Industries Centre, Mokokchung, I Nochet, informed that the directorate decided to organise the expo in Mopungchuket as there are many undiscovered talents in the rural area.

Limalenden Longkumer, convenor of the Mopungchuket Community Tourism Society, informed that out of the total 25 stalls, 12 are from Mopungchuket village and the remaining are from Mokokchung town and neighbouring areas. Out of 25 stalls, five were displaying handicrafts and the rest were all handlooms.

It may be mentioned that the event is the first district handloom expo held in a village in Mokokchung district.
