Imphal, June 18 (EMN): The 16th ‘Great June Uprising Unity Day’ (GJUD) was observed here on Sunday in Imphal by paying floral tributes in the memory of eighteen persons who lost their lives during the public protest against the ceasefire agreement on June 18, 2001 incident.
People from different parts of the state, family members of the slain persons, political leaders, including ruling and opposition MLAs and civil society organisations turned up to pay respects to the departed souls who died in security forces firing. The observation was jointly organised by observation committee of All Manipur United Clubs Organisation (AMUCO) and United Committee Manipur (UCM) at Kekrupat in Imphal.
People remembered the historic day when the people took to the streets in the State capital here after the then Union Government inserted the clause ‘without territorial limits’ in the ceasefire agreement with NSCN (IM).
The memorial service was followed by a public meeting which vowed to safeguard the territorial integrity of the State. The main market, cinema halls, educational institutions and other establishments remained closed during the observation.
On the other hand another report said that normal life in Naga-inhabited district headquarters including Tamenglong and Ukhrul were paralysed following a 12-hours “total shutdown in Naga territories” from 6 A.M to 6 P.M on June 18.
The bandh was called by United Naga Council (UNC) in support of the Indo-Naga Peace process and urging to translate the historic framework agreement signed on August 3, 2015 at New Delhi to its logical conclusion at the earliest.
