Dimapur, April 3 (EMN): The government has instated a waste management agency for Nagaland’s capital town Kohima. According to the government’s reporting agency Information and Public Relations (IPR), the Urban Development department has issued a notification stating the institution of the facility, besides listing out some of its functional particulars concerning the management of the agency.

The IPR issued updates on Wednesday stating that the government of Nagaland has set up a solid waste management authority to be in the administration of the Kohima Municipal Council (KMC).

The agency will ‘take up the exercise of a regular operation and maintenance’ of ‘Kohima solid waste management facility’ at Lerie, in Kohima town, funded by an Asian Development Bank-assisted programme. A board of directors is to be constituted for overall monitoring, operations and technical support of the facility.

The managing director of the solid waste management authority shall be authorised to take up a plant manager and assistant plant manager for operation and technical support, to be hired on contract basis.

The facility will also engage labourers as required for waste segregation and operation of the facility, the IPR stated. In order to build ‘local capacity,’ the solid waste management authority may also consider having a deputy plant manager to be provided through a local entrepreneurship resource, the Entrepreneurs Associates.

The solid waste management authority will maintain separate book of accounts for maintenance of the facility, the IPR stated. The KMC is also to depute sanitation inspectors and other staff that may be required to accomplish work and undertaking responsibilities that the facility is entrusted with.

Bye-Laws shall also be framed for the solid waste management authority which should be submitted to the government within 30 days for approval, the IPR added.
