Tikhir now a separate Naga tribe
Dimapur, Jan. 20 (EMN): Following the state Cabinet’s approval for upgrading Shamator sub-division into a full-fledged district, the Home department on Thursday officially notified the creation of Shamator district.
“The Governor of Nagaland is pleased to create Shamator district with headquarters at Shamator,” the notification read.
It stated that the district of Shamator would comprise of the following areas:
- Existing administrative area of Shamator sub-division under Tuensang district.
- Existing administrative area of Chessore sub-division, including Mangko EAC Circle, under Tuensang district.
- Administrative area of Sotokur EAC circle under Tuensang district, excluding Chingmelen, Helipong and Sipongsang villages.
- Tsurungto EAC Circle under Shamator sub-division, including Hutanger, Anatongre, Pungrungru, Nutsu, Maihpok and Tsuthu, villages under Kiphire district, which stand transferred to Tsurungto EAC Circle.
In a separate notification, the Home department also issued a notification about recognition Tikhir tribe.
“The Governor of Nagaland is pleased to recognise Tikhir as a separate Naga tribe,” it read.
With the announcement of three new districts — Tseminyu, Niuland and Chümoukedima – last month, and now Shamator, the number of districts in the state has increased to 16. The number of recognised tribes in the state has also increased to 17 with the addition of Tikhir.
