Govt has concern for the welfare of police force: Patton

The 38th General Conference of the Nagaland Police Service Association (NPSA) was held today at Rhododendron Hall, Chumukedima Police Complex.
Speaking on the ocassion as chief guest, Home Minister Y.Patton highlighted the important role of the NPS officers and their immense contribution towards the security of the society. He said, although the entire SPs are from IPS cadre, as many as 10 districts are manned by NPS officers in Nagaland today.
The Minister appealed to the NPS officers to uphold the confidence and trust bestowed upon by the superior officers and the government by proving worthy with dignity.
Expressing his confidence in police force in their service to the people, Patton said the government has concern for the welfare and privileges of the police force despite financial constraints.
He said, IT, the fastest growing technology in the world today has made the task of law enforcing agencies more complex and crimes with international ramifications are on the increase.’
Guest of honor, Chief Secretary, Toshi Aier while sharing the hard facts faced by the society, said the growing number of police personnel in Nagaland is the highest in the country according to the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BOPRD).
He said that the ratio between the DEF and IRB of Nagaland which is 1: 2.06 is a serious problem that should be looked upon. He said that the DEF of Nagaland has not been paid adequate attention as certain imbalances are being observed when compared at national level where the ratio of DEF and Arm are 4:1.
According to the findings, Nagaland State which is one of the smallest states in India has higher ratio of police personnel than 7 major larger states.
Aier said the strength of DEF in Nagaland needs to be improved. He also brought to light that the number of cases taken up by office heads is very rare.
Speaking during the conference, Aier urged upon all the police officials present to commit one’s profession with justice while involving in extra-curricular activities. He said ‘whatever we are, our perspective should be Nagaland.’
Officiating DGP, Lungriading (IPS) who came as special guest said, the society has the tendency to break rules which are actually made for good. He said many police officers lack investigation skill while the tendency of police officers (uniformed service) is not expected to exempt from work without genuine cases. Lungriading said that there is an urgent need to sensitize the I.O’s through criminal Law as most of them lack skills.
The general conference was followed by a business session where the fresh NPSA office bearers were nominated.
The list of the newly elected NPSA office bearers is headed by President Vekhosa Kotso, Vice President- Anchees Lotha and Watichuchang Ao; General Secretary Ben Longkumer; Joint Secretaries Khekali, Joseph Thongliu and Treasurer Vidilalie Zashumo.
