Governor underlines important role of newspapers

Eastern Mirror Desk Dimapur, Aug. 29 (EMN): Nagaland governor, PB Achraya, today expounded that newspapers in Nagaland are contributing more towards the development of the state than all the political parties. Acharya stated this while inaugurating a new newspaper office named as ‘Nagaland Today’ at 2 ½ Mile, Dimapur, in the presence of government officials and media fraternity. Speaking on the occasion, Acharya urged the media fraternity to play a pro-active role towards empowering the citizens. Acharya also called upon the fourth estate to empower the mass through dissemination of authentic report. While commenting on the beautiful culture and identity of the Naga people, Acharya lamented that the people were yet to showcase the positive side to the outside world even after attaining 72nd years of the country’s independence. Drawing his experiences from interactions with the mainland people, wherein the latter considered Nagaland to be infested with insurgency and not safe for habitation, Acharya urged the media fraternity to disseminate positive information by dispelling wrong information about the region. He urged the media in the state to transform wrong information and capitalise them for the benefit of the people. On the same note, Acharya urged the media in the state to highlight on the abundant resources endowed by nature and explore them for people’s benefit. Also stating that achievers should be givers, Acharya called upon the literate people of the state to empower the common mass and not merely waste their resources by going outside the state for employment. While acknowledging on the turmoil confronting the state of affairs, Acharya remarked that “Running away from problem will not solve the solve the problem.” He has rather urged the people to take upon the challenge and transform the society. Later, the governor inaugurated the office of ‘Nagaland Today.’ Publisher and managing director, Yudang Ao, underlined the vision of the paper which according to him stands for “freedom and pluralism of journalism.”
