Nand Kishore Yadav reviewed the Agriculture department's programmes, challenges and future plans, stressing sustainable farming, better livelihoods and effective implementation of government schemes.
DIMAPUR — Governor of Nagaland Nand Kishore Yadav on Tuesday chaired a review meeting of the Department of Agriculture at Lok Bhavan, Kohima, to assess the department's ongoing programmes, achievements, challenges and future plans for the development of the agriculture sector in the state.
According to a press release from Lok Bhavan, the department presented an overview of its organisational structure, key schemes and initiatives, highlighting efforts to improve agricultural productivity, promote sustainable farming practices, strengthen irrigation infrastructure, enhance mechanisation and increase farmers' income through centrally sponsored schemes and state programmes.
Officials informed the governor that nearly 70 per cent of Nagaland's population is engaged in agriculture, with women comprising about 65 per cent of the agricultural workforce.
The presentation also covered the state's agricultural profile, production targets, cropping intensity and progress under various programmes.
The department reviewed the implementation of major schemes, including Krishonnati Yojana, PM-Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY), National Food Security and Nutrition Mission (NFSNM), National Mission on Edible Oils, Mission Organic Value Chain Development for North Eastern Region (MOVCD-NER), National Mission on Natural Farming, PM-Kisan, Sub-Mission on Agricultural Mechanisation (SMAM), Per Drop More Crop (PDMC), Rainfed Area Development and Agroforestry.

It also briefed the governor on progress in expanding oil palm cultivation, promoting organic and natural farming, developing water harvesting infrastructure, supporting farmer training and capacity building, and improving market linkages for agricultural produce.
The department highlighted key challenges affecting implementation, including fragmented landholdings, inadequate infrastructure, difficult terrain and poor road connectivity, and outlined measures being taken to address them.
Appreciating the department's efforts in implementing development programmes across the state, Yadav stressed the need to strengthen sustainable agriculture, improve farmers' livelihoods and ensure effective implementation of government schemes.
He also encouraged the department to adopt innovative approaches, enhance convergence among stakeholders and work towards making agriculture more productive, resilient and market-oriented.
Senior officers from the Governor's Secretariat and the Department of Agriculture attended the meeting.
