Dimapur, May 28 (EMN): In the backdrop of poor performance by government schools in the recently declared HSLC and HSSLC examinations results, Governor PB Acharya has taken the government teachers to task for the debacle despite being paid substantially better than their private schools counterparts.
Stating that Public Work Department (PWD) and School Education Department has the highest State budget allocation, the Governor pointed out at the weakness of government schools and not on the part of the department. The Government made this remarks from his observation at the recently held felicitation programme for the HSLC and HSSLC toppers and rank holders where majority of the achievers were from private schools of Kohima and Dimapur.
Governor said this at the inauguration of Happy School at Government Primary School, Kacharigoan, on Sunday. The Happy School was an initiative of Innerwheel Club Dimapur.
Drawing attention on the Mid Day Meal scheme, Acharya pointed out that the Mid Day Meal, which is very important and meant for schools ironically do not reach the schools. He, therefore, called on the schools authorities to keep track on its process and ensure that the scheme is at its required place.
“In a democratic country every individual has a role to play, likewise we cannot wait for the department to do the whole lot,” articulated the state Governor.
Taking into consideration on the equipments provided to the school by Innerwheel Club of Dimapur, he remarked that ‘education should not only be academic oriented but encouraged for a healthy atmosphere in the school.’ In this regard, he suggested providing playground for the school children.
Acharya called upon the teachers to keep track on their students’ family activities and build a bond so that the education they provide benefits not only the learners but the whole society. “The situation of underprivileged people in a democratic society is not their creation but because of our deficiency. And to do away with this, we need to change our approach as there are many factors involved in making us what we are,” conveyed Acharya.
Innerwheel Club of Dimapur with its vision “Every school is a happy school and every child a literate” declared Government Primary School at Kacharigaon a Happy School under the presidentship of Dr. Khushboo Agarwal and club literacy chairman Asha Sharma.
Innerwheel Club Dimapur has adopted two government schools under its wings-the first being Government Middle School at Zeliangrong village and the second at Government Primary School, Kacharigaon- said the club president Dr. Khushboo Agarwal in her welcome address.
The club has provided fencing around school compound, repaired toilets, hand washing station with running water, renovated and painted the school building, set up library for students, provided sports equipments, shoes and socks for children. The club aims to make government schools more equipped to decrease the dropout rates, maintained Dr. Agarwal.
“Innerwheel Club Dimapur has multiple projects on literacy. It is in the process of setting up an adult literacy centre, sponsored 14 girls under Asha Kiran, got sponsorship for ten girls from State Governor Acharya under the “Beti Bachao Beti Padhao” scheme and is actively helping out in the orphanages for education,” highlighted the club president.
Dr. Agarwal further assured that the club continued support even in the days to come.
The school headmaster Rengma said the school, with 60 students, is functioning with three teachers who appointed in 2013 along with four youth volunteers from Kacharigoan village since its establishment in 2012.
Expressing gratitude to the Innerwheel Club of Dimapur, Rengma informed that the Club assurance to look after the school for three years has been a big achievement, which even the department had failed to deliver.
